[…] To look, then stop and see. To be present. To recognise beauty in the visual ‘nothings’ which we hardly pay attention to. To capture life around us, often made of haphazard non-events. To order and find meaning in chaos. Such is the photographer's mission.
Reading and organising lines, surfaces and volumes: an instinct that comes to me from the visual sensibility of an architect father who, as I realise more and more each day, has shaped me by osmosis; I will miss him forever.
The architecture that emerges from these pages is architecture without a capital A, organic and sometimes instinctive: the strata superimposed by history, the city constantly evolving, driven by major decision-makers (sometimes visionary, sometimes dystopian) but also by the aggregation of small changes often dictated by a need for functionality, without pretension.
But more than anything else, I hope that what emerges here are the people who live their lives and leave their silent traces in these spaces. The people who barely appear in these images, whom we glimpse in transparency, whom we imagine, with their stories, their joys, their difficulties, their essential humanity.
No, they are not ‘nothing’. On the contrary. It is to them that this work pays my silent tribute.
